About MFAC3514 Elective Placement

The Elective course is a compulsory component of the Medicine program, taking place in the 6th (final) year.

It is an 8-week course which may be completed as a single 8-week attachment or two 4-week attachments. Therefore, the minimum duration of a placement is 4 weeks.

  • A 2 week placement isn’t long enough to provide an adequate learning experience and it is difficult to get a 6 week placement as you are only allowed to do a maximum of 2 placements.

  • Students must be adequately supervised by a qualified doctor or a qualified researcher if a research placement.
  • an Advanced Trainee is not an appropriate supervisor.

  • Placements can be within Australia or Overseas
  • NOT INCLUDED. the following is not appropriate
    • Observerships - An observership is an educational experience where you shadow a member of the medical staff or workforce to learn more about the field. This experience allows you to observe the daily activities and responsibilities of healthcare professionals without directly participating in patient care
    • Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dates of Placements

Start: Placements can start in Mid -November

Finish: By the start of Term 1, end of February.

Students cannot undertake a MFAC3514 Elective before the end of Year 5.

Exception: undertaking the Oslo Exchange or you have approval from the Hub or Teaching Support.

Public holidays and Christmas/New Year are included as part of the placement as most hosts require placements start on a Monday and end on a Friday (except for public holidays).

The placement can be disrupted with a 2 week shutdown over Christmas.

Objectives of the Elective Term

The objectives of the Elective course will depend on the students choice and should include one of the following:

  • To experience a different type of health care delivery from that practised in Australia or overseas;
  • To correct deficiencies in your knowledge and skills in a selected area of Medicine;

Requirements of the Host/Partner

One supervisor, for each placement, will be expected to provide feedback regarding each student's learning and engagement at the end of the placement on the following:

  • Attendance
  • Attitude
  • General competence

About the Supervisor’s Report(s) / Feedback

Supervisors are not required to mark or grade any reports.

Multiple Supervisors - If there are multiple supervisors, only 1 supervisor can complete the Supervisor Report.

We recommend the supervisor sitting down with the student to provide feedback and complete the Supervisor Report together at the end of the placement.

It is preferred the supervisor completes the online version of the Supervisor Report however, a PDF or scanned version can be submitted.
