UNSW students enrolled in Medicine Program, see all instructions and information for MFAC3514 Elective Term on the Elective Term SharePoint
The Elective course is a compulsory component of the Medicine program, taking place in the 6th (final) year.
It is an 8-week course which may be completed as a single 8-week attachment or two 4-week attachments. Therefore, the minimum duration of a placement is 4 weeks.
A 2 week placement isn’t long enough to provide an adequate learning experience and it is difficult to get a 6 week placement as you are only allowed to do a maximum of 2 placements.
an Advanced Trainee is not an appropriate supervisor.
Start: Placements can start in Mid -November
Finish: By the start of Term 1, end of February.
Students cannot undertake a MFAC3514 Elective before the end of Year 5.
Exception: undertaking the Oslo Exchange or you have approval from the Hub or Teaching Support.
Public holidays and Christmas/New Year are included as part of the placement as most hosts require placements start on a Monday and end on a Friday (except for public holidays).
The placement can be disrupted with a 2 week shutdown over Christmas.
The objectives of the Elective course will depend on the students choice and should include one of the following:
One supervisor, for each placement, will be expected to provide feedback regarding each student's learning and engagement at the end of the placement on the following:
Supervisors are not required to mark or grade any reports.
Multiple Supervisors - If there are multiple supervisors, only 1 supervisor can complete the Supervisor Report.
We recommend the supervisor sitting down with the student to provide feedback and complete the Supervisor Report together at the end of the placement.
It is preferred the supervisor completes the online version of the Supervisor Report however, a PDF or scanned version can be submitted.
The link to the online Supervisor Report on InPlace will be emailed to the supervisor about 2 weeks before the end date of the placement.
Students engaged in the MFAC3514 Elective are indemnified should they become legally liable for injury to any person or damage to the property of others arising from their participation in the Elective.
The University has Liability in the amount of $20 Million for any one claim in the event of such an occurrence.
UNSW also provides Personal Accident Insurance if the student is accidently injured whilst participating in any approved and recognised course related activity including clinical placements.
It is the students responsiblity to provide partners/hosts with the proof of insurance in the form of Certifcates of Currency.
The Faculty can provide the Certificates of Currency on request. Please email medelectives@unsw.edu.au
Please note
In Australia Insurance is renewed once a year. Most universities in Australia, Insurance Certificates of Currency auto-renew on the 31st October per calendar year with no interruption to coverage on approved ongoing business (including placements that are a requirement of their degree or course).
The new Certificates of Currency will become available from 1st November each year.
It’s the student’s responsibility to request the certificate from UNSW Insurance and provide it to the host/partner, however if the host/partners would prefer to receive them directly from the faculty, we can accommodate the request.
In general, the University acts on advice issued by The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
The faculty will not approve electives in countries which are declared by DFAT as “Do not travel” or “Reconsider your need to travel”.
Whilst electives are organised well in advance, it is essential for students to check the DFAT Smartraveller website on a regular basis for travel warnings before leaving Australia.
If you have an opportunity for an Elective Place you would like to promote to the students, please email WIL Team Medicine Faculty medelectives@unsw.edu.au or phone +61 2 9385 8909
